Eguavoen Resigns As Super Eagles Interim Coach

Augustine Eguavoen has reportedly resigned from his position as the interim coach of the Super Eagles.

According to OwnGoalNigeria, Eguavoen stated that his assignment was limited to two matches.
It was recalls that Eguavoen was appointed by the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following unsuccessful efforts to secure a permanent head coach for the national team.

Eguavoen oversaw two qualifying matches for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against the Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Eguavoen’s resignation comes immediately after Rwanda held Super Eagles to a draw in their AFCON qualifying match on Tuesday, September 9, 2024.

It could be recalled that the NFF had in August announced the appointment of German tactician, Bruno Labbadia, as the head coach of the Super Eagles.

Unfortunately, Labbadia suddenly withdrew himself from the deal to coach the Nigerian national men’s football team, a development the country’s Minister of Sports, John Enoh, has described as embarrassing.

The NFF said in a statement that the deal collapsed because the federation refused to pay its taxes to the German government.

In an interview with Arise TV, Enoh revealed that he promptly approached the NFF seeking an explanation for the abrupt turn of events.

“This was very embarrassing and regrettable”, the sports minister said.

“I immediately got across to the NFF on this and asked why go public on an appointment of a coach when you have not concluded. Their defence is that they got a commitment from the coach on this.”

Following Labbadia’s withdrawal, Augustine Eguavoen has assumed the interim role of leading the Super Eagles for the fourth time in his managerial career.

A few days after his appointment, Eguavoen helped the Super Eagles of Nigeria to record one win against Benin Republic and an away draw against Rwanda in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers this month.
